Creating your nursery is perhaps one of the most important jobs in your life. Whether you are first-time parents or experienced pros, your baby’s room should be a haven of tranquility and peace.

Even before your baby is born there are a number of important decisions that will have a big impact on his or her health and safety. Finding the appropriate baby bedding is one choice that is often given little consideration. However, babies spend the majority of their time sleeping, which makes all your decisions about their crib and nursery bedding vitally important.

Baby bedding in particular, has come a long way over the years. In the past, babies were often placed on very soft baby bedding in cribs with stuffed animals, blankets, pillows and more. However, this was proven to be a severe health risk to the baby due to accidental blockage of the nose and mouth. This covering would impair the baby’s breathing and with results as serious as SIDS.

Now that the risk is understood, parent s realize the importance of finding baby bedding that isn’t too soft or too hard –it has to be just right!

These bedding choices include your crib mattress, crib sheets, comforter sets, bumper pads and anything else your baby will be sleeping with. In order to protect your little one, you need to ensure the crib mattress snugly fits your crib, without having any excess room that can trap your baby in any way.

Your crib mattress should be firm, and a lightweight mattress is also ideal, since you will need to take the mattress out of the crib in order to change the sheets properly. When looking at the sheets for your baby bedding, make sure that you use only the bottom, fitted sheet, as it fits snugly around the crib mattress. Bumper pads should be thin and fasten securely to the crib so they can’t come loose. Also be sure the bumper pad ties don’t dangle into the crib.

It is safest to have as little as possible in your baby’s crib, so forgo the extra blankets, pillows, stuffed animals and more. All of these can be hazardous for your baby.

Cotton is the ideal fabric since it is breathable and washable. You want to make sure your sheets are durable, since there will be the need for numerous washings. Another essential is a waterproof mattress cover, this will ensure an easy clean up after any accidents or messes.

Once you have found baby bedding that meets these safety guidelines, the fun can begin. Decorate the room to fit your taste. Baby bedding comes in so many colors, patterns and textures you are sure to find the bedding set that fits your style perfectly and you will be on your way to creating the room of your dreams for your new bundle of joy!
